Step 1: Identify the 'Golden' Dimension

The part might have 15 different measurements on the drawing. But which one is the one that absolutely has to be right? For a stamped bracket, that's often the hole-to-hole center distance or the thickness of the mounting flange. If this dimension is off by 0.5mm, the part is scrap.

Checkpoint: Circle the tightest tolerance on your drawing. If you can't read it, call the engineer before you do anything else.

Step 2: Confirm the Exact Material Grade

Checkpoint: "Please send one part from the middle of the production run for approval." If they can't do that, you're not buying a repeatable process—you're buying luck.

One More Thing: The 'Should've Asked' List

The people who are best at this don't just check dimensions. They ask these questions before the phone call:

  • What's the absolute latest we can cancel without penalty? (Circa 2024, most suppliers offer a 24-hour window for custom items.)
  • Can they hold stock for us? (Saves the next rush fee.)
  • Is the CAD file the single source of truth? (I've seen drawings from 2019 still in circulation.)

I still kick myself for not asking that last one on Project 209. If I'd checked the revision date, we wouldn't have had 38 out of 40 parts that didn't fit. That was a $1,200 mistake, and the client's line was down for a day.
