Defending the 'One-Stop' Argument

Fair point. In theory, a single point of contact reduces administrative overhead. But in practice, the coordination savings rarely outweigh the quality risks—unless the supplier genuinely excels across all the processes they offer.

- For simple components (e.g., a basic bracket with standard tolerances), a multi-capability generalist might be fine. The risk is low, and the convenience matters.
- For complex or critical parts (e.g., engine components, safety structures, stamped parts with tight fit requirements), I want a specialist. Full stop.
This worked for me, but my context is mid-volume B2B automotive with unpredictable order patterns. If you're a high-volume OEM with dedicated quality teams and long lead times, your calculus might be different. I can only speak to what I've experienced firsthand.

If you're sourcing parts, ask the hard question early. Don't be impressed by a long list of capabilities. Be impressed by honest answers about what a supplier truly excels at. The rest is just noise.
