If a timing chain breaks while the engine is running, you're not looking at a repair—you're looking at a replacement. On an interference engine—which covers most vehicles built in the last 15 years—the pistons hit the open valves at speed. The result: bent valves, scored pistons, sometimes a cracked cylinder head. That's $3,000 to $7,000 in damage, typically. If you catch it at idle and the stars align, you might get away with just the chain, guides, and tensioner for $1,200 to $2,500. But the engine is usually gone.
I've managed parts procurement for a 40-person auto repair operation for about six years. What Actually Breaks When a Timing Chain Fails
