I manage parts ordering for a fleet of 72 vehicles—delivery vans, company sedans, and a handful of older trucks. What you’re paying for is a working anti-drainback valve and a filter that doesn’t collapse under pressure. Regular name-brand stuff meets that. Simple.

Do You Need a Genuine Sensor for a Renault Camshaft?

Scenario A: Car under warranty

Use a genuine part from the dealer. A warranty replacement requires a part that matches the original specification, and if something else goes wrong, you don’t want the dealer blaming the non-OEM sensor. It’s a small cost premium for a big piece of documentation.

Scenario B: Older car, 150,000 km or more

A quality aftermarket sensor from a known brand—Bosch, Valeo, Magneti Marelli—is usually fine. The “genuine only” belief comes from an era when aftermarket sensors were sometimes poorly calibrated. That’s largely changed. Many aftermarket sensors are made in the same factories as the original. The important variable is the brand, not the badge on the box.

This is one place where I’ll give the opposite of the popular answer. If you’re keeping an old Renault on the road, you don’t need a Genuine Parts and Accessories label. You need a sensor with a return policy. Buy from a place that will replace it if the code comes back.

Scenario C: There’s another fault behind the code

Camshaft sensor codes can be caused by timing chain stretch, a damaged connector, oil contamination, or even a low battery in rare cases. I’ve thrown a camshaft sensor at a car without checking the wiring first. The code said “circuit malfunction.” I assumed sensor. It wasn’t. Looking back, I should have checked connector pin tension and resistance before buying anything. That mistake cost me a weekend and an extra part.   • What is the actual root cause? A diagnostic code is an invitation to look deeper, not a conclusion.

This approach worked for us, but our situation is a mid-size fleet with predictable ordering patterns and a finance team that wants paper trails. If you’re an individual owner with a single car, skip the fleet overhead and focus on part quality. Your mileage may vary.

Our office is set to 68°F in winter and 74°F in summer. The warehouse stays at 55°F. Neither setting is “optimal” for everyone. Same logic applies to parts.
